KIM KOEHLER, storyteller- Multi-Disciplinary Arts – Artists-in-Schools – Greater Columbus Arts Council

Kim is a storyteller who offers a Novel Approach to History. Her lively performances
are a blend of stories, songs and student participation. Educators specializing in art, drama,
music, science, social studies and language arts can schedule a free academic standards consultation with the Artist.

The Artist’s goals are to

* delight audiences as she brings history to life

* encourage the craft of storytelling

* promote the love of reading historical novels and texts

* support educators in their quest to reach Ohio Academic Standards

 

Storytelling Programs Available

Anna Kelly – Ohio Pioneer (ages 6 to 14)

Envision the life of a hard working Ohio pioneer and her family. “Anna Kelly” delights audiences with animated stories and songs that dramatize special moments in time.

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY – Ships of Pirates & Privateers (ages 6 to 14)

Imagine life on a ship’s crew. Witness life on a ship through the eyes of a boy…a woman…a pirate or a stowaway! Learn about seafaring journeys, trade and explorers.

Wild Adventures (ages 9 to 18)

Learn about a death-defying canoe journey. Hear wild, real life stories about white
water rafting, mountain backpacking, camping and more. Explore the foibles and folly of the ever-optimistic outdoorsman during this character education and geography program.

Medieval Memories (ages 5 to 11)

Enjoy a touch of fantasy with Medieval Memories. Romp through castles & meet
royalty. Imagine talking dragons and enchanted forests.

Pilgrim Adventures (ages 5 to 11)

Recount tales of heroic deeds and delightful escapades. Personalize lessons through family stories.

Snowy Surprises (ages 5 to 11)

Revel in exuberant character education tales this winter. Enjoy true stories about playing and exploring in the snow.

 

Format and Requirements of all of the artist’s storytelling performances listed above:

* Duration: 30-45 min.

* Up to 200 students per show, three consecutive grades at a time.

Workshops Available

 

Pioneer Workshops (ages 8 to 12)

Small groups can learn science and math with Anna Kelly – Ohio Pioneer.

Enjoy home craft activities, games, songs and pioneer fun.

Format and Requirements the Pioneer Workshops:

* Duration: 45-60 min.

* Requirements: 20 to 50 students per workshop, one grade at a time.

FOR TEACHERS: HISTORICALLY SPEAKING(Adult)


Put oral communication through dramatic storytelling into your classroom! Enjoy a delightful mix of demonstration, hands-on exploration and peer coaching to boost your confidence as a storyteller. Enable your students to connect skills from reading and
social studies to enhanced oral and visual communication. Encourage students to
become storytellers at all academic achievement levels.

Artist Fees and Requirements for: Historically Speaking for Teachers

o Duration: 60-90 min. – in service day or evening event

 

 

RESIDENCY: A NOVEL APPROACH to HISTORY (Grade levels 4 to 8)


This residency is designed to support lessons in oral communications, social studies and language arts.
Kim works with 20 to 75 students for five days. The week culminates with
student performances. The artist can also present up to four concerts during the week, to delight the whole school’s students and staff.


Students use historical fiction as a springboard for research, character development and
oral communication. They hear stories of history and society, during the moment in time in which each book occurs. Novels from various eras are the foundation used to develop “What’s Next?” tales. Students make up and polish stories that could happen to
characters, between chapters of their books.

Requirements for: A Novel Approach to History Residency

o Residency Duration: An introductory day, then five days of workshops
